From about 9:30 last night to after midnight, it was a game of 'gunshot or firework'?
Do people not realize bullets shot into the air come back down.
No they don't realize -or- if they do, they simply don't care. Some significant % of gunshot deaths (don't have the stats right now) come from accidental shootings. We hear about the tragedies weekly.

An accidental shooting is a completely different situation. Both can be prevented, only one is intentional.
Someone who shoots their gun into the sky on NYE isn't "intending" for that bullet to kill someone, so in that sense it's accidental. However, in the legal realm, it's against the law and a felony. If and when they find the individual, that person will face one or more felony charges, as they should, and hopefully will be punished to the fullest extent of the law.

They're intending to shoot their firearm, and if they don't understand the consequences then they probably aren't a legal gun owner. Which isn't really surprising, I sort of doubt people that shoot their firearms into the air in "celebration" are legal gun owners.
Actually I guess someone died last year also, on the fourth.
