I know there are some people on here that enjoy solving the
"what's it going to be" questions. I have one that really has my
interest. I got this rezoning notice from the city and the second
item got my attention...

The first photo is the letter and the second photo shows the area in
question. I have heard rumors it could be an auto carrier facility of
some kind? All I'm hoping for is it might bring some more trains through
town? Thanks for looking!

I couldn't access the bizjournal site since it was a paywall
and I stopped getting the Sanford Herald years ago. I would
think any traffic would go through Hamlet/Sanford to get to it? I can't
see CSX paying for trackage rights to come off the A Line at
Selma and go through Raleigh. If it ever happens and I'm still
alive when and if it does I'll be amazed. We can only hope it happens?
Many thanks for your help, I appreciate it!

Relax. I don't believe for one minute that this has anything to do with traffic Richmond-Selma-Raleigh-Hamlet and then points south. CSX is planning for one or more large industrial customers somewhere in this vicinity that it would be inconvenient to serve from the Raleigh yard or from Hamlet.

I wonder if this has to do with the yard in Johnston County that the local gentry threw a hissy fit about?

I'm so relaxed I'm about to fall asleep typing this. Granted this is all a mute
point because nothing has happened and my not ever happen. IF a large
industrial customer does come, I was just trying to figure out how CSX would
move the product? If not Raleigh or Hamlet, the only other options I can think of
would be the locals in Apex or Aberdeen? I just got excited after all the rumors that
were around about the S Line being sold off or abandoned a few years ago...

CSX would move inbound or outbound shipments via Hamlet. There are still excellent connections from Hamlet south toward Atlanta, south toward Florida via Dillon SC, and north via Pembroke.

If the S-line is ever replaced between Raleigh and Petersburg -- my guess is 20 years but that's just a guess -- then CSX could, in theory, reroute freights over it.

Are you saying you think they will quit using that line?

The S-line between the NC-VA border and Petersburg was abandoned in the 1980s. The segment between Raleigh and the border is still in use for local freight customers, although it has deteriorated a lot since the 1980s. The plan is to re-install the missing segment and upgrade the remaining segment for high-speed passenger trains. Won't happen anytime soon.

If Hamlet is still around then? I came by there yesterday and it is a
virtual ghost town. An almost empty yard and a LOT of stored power.
A very sad sight to see.
