Had to take road sign and eye test as I recall, but they always have option to do road test if they want. Study those road signs, NC has lots of different ones, more than I’ve seen anywhere. Good luck!

If you are coming from Michigan learn about the yellow left turn signals vs flashing red. Also they frown on driving 95 mph on freeways here.

Update:

I had an appointment yesterday and got NC driver license and got it done in 30 minutes.

Showed Michigan driver license, passport and social security card;had to take a vision exam (since I had restriction to wear glasses) and a 'road sign' test...about a dozen of them (did not ask for address proof).

Then drove over to plate agency and got a new plate; they did not have specialized plate; ended up ordering online!

Surprised to see a $250 highway use tax (glad it is one-time) :-)

Note: They returned my Michigan license.

Thanks for all your responses.

Not related to testing, but like most (all?) states, you now have a choice to obtain a Real ID to fly, gain access to some federal facilities, et. al. It doesn't cost more, but not sure how new, out-of-state registrant can meet the NC "residency" requirement? It may not matter since they keep pushing back the Real ID mandate (think it's now May 2023)... but who relishes an extra trip to the DMV and paying $13 fee for early renewal?

Related, if you have a passport then that serves the same purpose as a Real ID. The next time I renew my driver's license, I'll get a Real ID, but in the interim, I'll use my passport.
