No plans for these in Wake County yet but surrounding counties including Johnston have green lighted $6 million towards the installation of AI based weapon detectors in all county schools. Thoughts on whether or not this would be a good idea for Wake County to implement?

I think utilizing modern technology versus something like metal detectors is a good idea. Metal detectors would be a logistical nightmare I think.

The creator of ChatGPT has already stated this isn't going to work long-term. He's doing what he can to help short-term in detecting AI-created works, but eventually, it won't be enough. How long will that be? My guess is 10 years or less, given the rapid development we've already seen.

Maybe instead of trying to focus on what AI can do, we should instead teach what it can't. But I don't hold out hope that the education system will evolve to do so in a timely manner.

Remember, wherever there is artificial intelligence, there will also be artificial stupidity.

Still need a police presence ...and monitoring of the system. And ongoing certification that the AI's programming is "bias-free" and not "profiling". And actual enforced penalties for attempting to "spoof" the system. And...

Almost anything can be used as a weapon.

I'm not necessarily opposed to using proven technology to help increase school safety, but I'm sort of getting Theranos/Elizabeth Holmes vibes about this company and the CEO. It might not be total BS, but he's overstated what it can do and how effective it is and how easy it us to use. Unfortunately, school systems that have already spent millions on it are not likely to admit it may have not been the best move or publicize any problems with it.

AI is as misunderstood as DNA, and that gap is going to be used to exploit your pockets.

By the time the gun has made it to the scanner, you have already failed. Its just another Band-Aid for a bullet hole.

Artificial intelligence is no match for natural stupidity.

When folks compromise security like leaving the back door open, no amount of tech will keep you safe.
