We are an early 60s couple looking to relocate to the Triangle area to be closer to family.
-30 minutes or less to the airport
-a mix of ages, or barring that, skewing younger
-some charm - older homes, walkable Main Street area, local restaurants, and stores
-a place where traffic and parking aren't an issue all day. Would like to be able to drive to the grocery store during the day and not be on high alert
-Ideally, someplace that isn't ultra-Conservative but that's not a deal breaker
Wake Forest seems promising, as does Hillsborough. Are there any other places we should look?
Hillsborough checks a lot of the boxes but is a little pricier than Wake Forest. Wake Forest also checks a lot of the boxes but the traffic there is not to be underestimated.
Budget up to 900k. Not interested in a brand-new subdivision or looking out my back window and seeing directly into my neighbor's kitchen. Would like a lot that wouldn't be a ton of work to maintain but has some mature landscaping.
From house to the terminal at RDU would be a stretch in 30 minutes from Hillsborough, but this question is impossible to answer without more specific information....just about the entire Triangle would qualify at this point.
ETA with that budget again just about anywhere....the traffic here has changed dramatically in the last decade. Used to be able to go out in the middle of the day and be the only one on the road, now .... not so much.
What size house and what kind of house? Where does your family live? Are you still working and if so where's the job?

The family is in Oakwood
Retired so no commuting worries.
House size around 3000 square feet or less
Budget 900k
Not a brand-new subdivision
A lot that has some mature landscaping but it doesn't have to be large
In the late 1980s I could leave my house in north Raleigh 30 minutes before scheduled departure and get to the gate in Terminal C (now Terminal 2) before the door closed. I know, because I did it several times. Parking was plentiful and close by, security was a breeze, and the airlines were not so insistent about completing the boarding process -- especially if you had a full-fare ticket.
I'd live in or near downtown Cary, and if the house needed work fix it up to suit, can probably do that in your budget. Ticks all the other boxes nicely, close enough to Raleigh you don't even need to get on the highway, close enough to the airport and all the shopping you need relatively nearby.
