I took a ride by Northgate today. I worked there a few years and shopped there many more. I ride by now and then for nostalgia. It was Durham's prime shopping area for years but closed in 2020.
I noticed that Ruby Tuesday still has their sign up at one of the main entrances. All other stores removed their signs long ago, except for Sears. Who wants to ID with Sears these days?
I went to the RT website to contact them. Not sure my message ever entered their system and they gave no phone number to call. They did give a street address so I just finished a letter to them, with a photo. I am among the few dinosaurs still writing letters.
No business should leave a sign at a closed location, especially not in a closed mall. Nothing smacks more of "used to be" than a closed location at a closed mall.
If any of you work for such chains, you should look into whether your companies have such locations. Business is hard enough these days without looking irrelevant.
The only remaining RTs in this area (broadly speaking!) are in Mebane, Henderson, Sanford, and Garner/Clayton. Two-thirds or maybe three-quarters of the locations that the chain had at its peak have closed.
This. Why pay for removal of something that's going to be demolished by the landlord anyway?
Doubtful people are saying "I was going to drive 45 minutes to Ruby Tuesday in Mebane but now I'm not because it's so tacky to have a sign on an entirely closed mall"
The reality is, nobody here knows the lease agreement and the ire should be directed towards the owners of the mall, in my opinion.
They still have some locations. 1 in Mebane is less than an hour away. They should care a great deal if they are trying to survive.
They closed 200+ stores nationwide in 2021 as a result of a bankruptcy in late 2020 (COVID, I'd imagine.)
The one on New Bern in Raleigh by the Wal-Mart and Hedingham closed as well. Honestly, I had to google it to confirm if it had closed; I drive by all the time but rarely in the evening. You couldn't tell looking at it at 10:00 AM that it's shuttered.
All of which is to say, that the company is in dire straits (or at least was) and was unlikely in a position to go and take all their branded merch.
Ruby Tuesdays emerged from bankruptcy in 2021 with 223 locations remaining. They have (perhaps wisely) focused on smaller towns minus a lot of competition and a lower cost to operate. The closest RTP area locations are in Burlington, Clayton and Sanford.
