Tourist dollars surge recently adding billions into the local economy.

Concerts, sports, food, cultural events and nice people cited as prime drivers for visitors.

Quite surprising:

I can see this being the case. I live in a downtown condo and in the last 5 or so years i've seen tons of groups walking around downtown touring places like the Warehouse district and Glenwood South. These groups are clearly not locals.

Do they appear to be Asian or European? Just curious.

I'm all for a road trip weekend so I can see staying someplace like Raleigh and touring the area.

I know people who have expiring airline miles/points and will pick a location based on how far they can go and hotel availability for a weekend.

Thank goodness they won't be coming to Cary. As everyone knows, Cary is vanilla

For events/festivals in general - sure. Hotel rooms throughout the area were sold out during Dreamville.

Otherwise? Probably not much so.

And more importantly, how would one necessarily differentiate a European tourist from a European local? The article mentions out-of-towners, so maybe there's an iPhone app where we can snap a photo of a suspected tourist, and AI is used to determine not only their ethnic background, but whether they are local versus from Greensboro? Hmm...
