my wife and i are coming down for a wknd to scope out the area for a possible relo.

can anyone recommend a hotel or B&B in a nice area of downtown that we can walk to some good shopping and restaraunts, get a feel for the area at night.

Something in the 100-150/night range. Doesn't have to be too fancy but clean and safe. Location more important.

Thanks

There's a place called the Oakwood Inn Bed & Breakfast that is (not surpringly) in Oakwood, one of the charming "refurbished" old neighborhoods right adjacent to downtown.

I've never stayed there, but hear about it a lot, and it most certainly would be in a great location for what you're asking.

I loved staying at the Marriott across the street from the Crabtree Valley Mall. It was recently re-done and oh, those beds are sooo comfortable. We stayed for 3 days when we first got here.

But I think it was around 200 a night.

I second the Cameron Park Inn. I've stayed there several times and always had a great stay. The suites might be out of your price range, but I've usually paid about $150 for the Magnolia Room. They offer a 10% AAA discount, too.

It's a gorgeous house in a beautiful neighborhood. There's a big front porch, and the inn has free wifi.

Depending on when you will be coming down, the brand new Raleigh Marriott City Center downtown might have rooms starting at $139. They also offer AAA rates. I haven't been in there, but it literally just opened not too long ago and is part of the brand new Convention Center complex smack dab in the middle of downtown on Fayetteville St.

Another downtown option is the Clarion Hotel, which is in a great location close to the Glenwood South nightlife and also walkable to all of downtown. They have a restaurant and bar on the top floor that have great views of the city.

I am not familiar with B&B's in the area, but those that have been mentioned are in beautiful neighborhoods that are pretty much walkable to most downtown locations.
