Definitely check out Bull City Running Company (Bull City Running Company-Durham, North Carolina). Local independent business, great customer service, and the owners are both avid runners and committed to the community. They offer a complete gait analysis and will take as much time as you need to fit you for shoes. I highly recommend them! Southpoint Crossing shopping center and corner of Hwy 54 and Fayetteville Rd. in Durham -- right off of 40.
Inside Out Sports is a good option and they are located in Cary.
Another suggestion is 9th Street Active Feet in Durham. To quote their "Our Staff" page on their Web site, "Each team member (Staff Assistant) at 9th Street Active Feet, Inc. has a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree related to athletic training, sports science, pre-physical therapy." This was a big deal to me since I've had some foot issues. I had my best fit with them and it's been worth the drive to have the specialized attention.
Happy shoe shopping!
