Ok, since it looks like the economy is going to be in the toilet for the next decade or so, I thought it would be a good idea to come up with a good list of cheap, yet fun or entertaining things to do around these parts. Let's have your list. I have not been here long enough to have a very good one yet, but here are some of the few I have done.
1. Go for a walk at the local golf courses
2. Take dog to the park.
3. Go to the beach, have a barbacue for the day, then drive back home.
4. Farmer's market, (everyone has to eat)
5. Go to local museums.
1) Go the the Eno State Park (the one off Pleasant Green Rd. is our favorite) and watch the turtles sunning themselves.
2) Drag the lawnchairs out back and watch for meteors (mid-August: Perseids).
3) NC State Fair on "goat weekend" -- commune with the goats and achieve inner peace.
4) Hang over the fence and coo at the neighbor's horses.
5) Drive to SW Virginia and go hiking. Eat large evil breakfasts at "Aunt Beas" in Hillsville.
1) Walk the dog in Bond Park, stop and see the ducks playing
2) Go to the Raleigh Farmers Market
3) Walk around the Duke Gardens
4) Go for a drive and explore new areas we haven't yet seen
5) Enjoy a glass of wine on the back porch with our neighbors
OK, here are my top 10 that I have done or want to do that have not already been mentioned:
1) Walk around the flea market in Raleigh
2) Go to an open barn at Celebrity Dairy in November & February (@The Inn at Celebrity Dairy - (919) 742-5176 -Chatham County, North Carolina)
3) Hike in Umstead Park
4) Go to the Scrap Exchange in Durham and get supplies for a random art project
5) Live music at Weaver Street Market in Carrboro on Thursday evenings and Sunday 11-1 through October
6) Live music at American Tobacco in Durham April - October.
7) Yates Mill Park in Raleigh WakeGOV.com - Historic Yates Mill County Park
8) Durham or Carrboro Farmer's Markets on Saturdays
9) Bennett Place in Durham Bennett Place
10) Tour the Carolina Brewing Company The Carolina Brewing Company: Tour Information (http://www.carolinabrew.com/tour.php - broken link)
Go to my favorite spot at Shelly Lake which is on the dock by the bridge (where the ducks hang out) and just sit and enjoy the beauty of the lake. Think I'll bring a thermos of coffee and book next time.
I don't really think going to the beach or Va is really "local" (or cheap with these gas prices)
so I will focus only on local activities:
1.) local museums (science, art, history etc)
2.) local college campuses (walking through Duke Gardens or feeding the ducks at Meredith)
3.) Pullen Park: beautiful for any age, especially in spring
4.) Walking or canoeing at Falls Lake, Lake Jordan, the Eno, Shelley Lake, Lake Johnson etc
5.) The Flea market
6.) The Farmer's Market/activities
7.) various free local festivals like Diwali, free NC symphony concerts at Koka Booth Ampitheater in the summer and Free festivals/concerts in downtown Raleigh like Artsplosure and Live after 5.
8.) Tour the state capitol
9.) Camp/picnic in the local state parks
10.) Free concerts in Raleigh in Moore Square
The Carmike movie theater on Blue Ridge has cheap movies for $1.50 and there always seem to be one or two worth seeing.
Good way to wrap up a quick trip to the Fairgrounds Flea Market.
