Hi

Does anyone know information on where to go, from Durham to get a visa to go to the u.k, not sure which is the best one to get, either a work visa or a partner visa, can not seem to find fee's or where to go, closest to Durham..... has anyone been through this process and can shred some light on what the process is like. i am from the u.k but i'm asking for my partner who is from the us, and wants to come and stay for maybe a year or two...

any info would be great thanks

Lorraine

I guess you already know this but you need a visa from the UK not a visa from the US. That being said you normally would have to work through the UK embassy or consulate offices the closest of which is the embassy in Washington. The following was from the UK embassy website:

"The UK Border Agency and the British Consulates-General throughout the USA work in partnership with a commercial organisation: Worldbridge. You can find out whether you need a visa and how to apply through Worldbridge’s website.

Worldbridge also provides information through an e-mail and telephone enquiry service, the number is 1-900-656-5000 and costs $3.00 per minute, or 1-212-796-5773 for a $12.00 flat fee. All the information provided is supplied and approved by the UK Border Agency."

Lorraine,

I'm not sure it's as simple as that. My wife got her visa from the UK Embassy in Washington. Don't expect to obtain it while you wait or you could be in for a disappointment. I think it cost $250 or so (11 years ago) so it's not cheap. I think the only options were, at the time , a fiance visa or spouse visa - Fiance visa didn't give authority to work in the UK but the spouse visa did.
Even being married the visa only gives youa time limited stay for the first 12 months , after which you can apply to stay indefinitely ( but why would you when everyone's leaving??)

Husbands, wives and partners (INF 4)

Even though you were looking for something close to Durham, this really isn't a regional question and you might get a better answer if you asked a moderator to move this thread to the UK forum.

Just make sure he gets all his vaccinations in order. You can catch all sorts from the English!
If he isn't going to work, don't even bother with the visa, you know how lax the authorities are there. Having said that, I doubt he will last 'a year or so'. He will be tearing his hair out after two weeks at the realisation that the English are all assh**es

The problem with "not bothering" with a visa is that the authorities will know you overstayed. So you go to England, tell the nice immigration officer you're visiting family for a week and off you go and stay for a year. At that point, if you ever want to leave the country you're stuck. When you leave, the second you try to enter the UK again they'll see the over-stay and require you to immediately return to you country of origin.

If you're serious about this, do it the legal way. It will take a little longer than you'd like but it'll also save an incredible amount of stress further down the road.
