We've had United with two different employers and were very happy with their coverage and responsiveness. I wouldn't be concerned, although plans may differ.
My company is looking at switching from Blue Cross to United Healthcare. I have never heard of them before so I wonder how other's experiences have been with them.
Any opinions either way out there?
I think a lot will depend on your company's specific plan.
We have BCBS medical and Medco (Rx).
We have friends with BCBS and our plans are different.
Some pay more or less for copays and prescriptions.. and varying levels of coverage.
There are standard plans and enhanced plans with different premiums, out of pocket expenses, copays, allowances, etc.
We pay a lot of money for a plan that required $60 copays for docs and for prescriptions, and we have had a really hard time getting a lot of meds covered--they simply refuse to cover a number of them and don't even accept appeals.
One of the points of my post was that your specific PLAN has a lot to do with what you get from UHC. Sounds like you had a crappy plan, meaning your employer cheaped out and went for the least expensive plan they could find. Don't blame UHC for this -- blame your cheapskate employer.

Health insurance costs are huge, and go up every year. Just because an employer tries to find an economical plan, doesn't mean they are "cheapskate." I personally have no problem paying a little higher copays for lower monthly rates. I'm currently on COBRA from my previous employer - it's a great plan, $15 copays for doctors, no deductibles etc. For this Cadillac plan I'm paying over $500 a month for individual coverage which I consider completely insane. My employer before that had single coverage at less than $300/month, and the copays & deductibles were quite liveable. I plan to switch to a higher copay individual plan with BCBS in March - and save at least $200 a month by doing so.
^^^ That's why I'm pleased that my employer offers a choice of plans. You can't please everyone. What works for you won't work for me. So I choose to have a higher rate with low copays. You choose to have a lower rate with high copays. But my comment still stands, cheapskate name aside -- that person's complaint was a result of the plan offered by the employer, not a result of anything UHC did.
We had United (No)Care for a while through my husband's company. We had the worst time getting them to cover anything. They would not cover my visits to my rheumatologist for Rheumatoid Arthritis, even though I have been treating for 5 years under the companies old plan. I wasn't asking for any new medication or treatment. Just the same treatment I was receiving.
We had to fight with them for almost a year just to cover routine care. By that time, many of the employee at the company were so fed up that the HMFIC decided to go with another carrier.
Just be careful. A few states have successfully sued them as well.
we switched this year to UHC from BCBSNC because Wake Med North didn't accept BCBSNC -- not the emergency docs anyhow. Just be sure to check carefully with your docs and specialists and other providers before having services performed and you should be fine!
Wake Emergency Physicians signed a contract with BCBSNC last month.
I have United Health Care here and have been satisfied. Here in NC it's under its its affiliate called Golden Rule. BCBSNC is also good, but United Healthcare is nationwide.
