Throw it in a burn barrel and burn it. I think today is a safe day to burn some papers.
Yes, I was going to say "Do you have a fireplace?"
Otherwise, shredders are cheap, probably as cheap as paying someone else. Or, rip them up by hand into reasonably-small pieces, drop them off in one of those big recycling bins that take white paper, then throw some other nonconfidential papers on top of them--nobody will go through those huge bins and they'll be pulped and recycled.
I can totally relate, as I have piles of old records from houses we used to own and we need to shred too. There is just way too much to run through our personal shredder at home; I would have to devote days to it as our personal shredder can't take more than 10 pages at a time. I haven't done it yet, but I have exchanged mail with Shred Pro about their rates. I will say they were VERY prompt about answering e-mail. I'm looking into organizing a neighborhood shredding day (in my neighborhood in North Cary). If you want me to let you know when (if) I actually schedule it then let me know. I'm still in the planning stages.

I used the folks at Phoenix to shred a bunch of stuff. But, go there at your own risk. It's in an industrial area which doesn't have nicely paved sidewalks and landscaping, so it might be a little frightening for a Cary-ite to venture there.
This type of response is being thrown out at a lot of people recently and is getting old. Obviously if I wanted to take the time to search, I may have been able to find something. I preferred the lazy method of having other people tell me instead.
I saw a truck drive past me today in Cary called Shred-it. I have no idea if it's only commercial or residential too, but it was driving through residential streets.
