I already feel like my electricity bill has doubled !
When we moved to Wake Forest in 2000, our bills included electricity, water and trash collection.
First the water bill went away when the City of Raleigh took over our water.
Recently, the trash collection fee (15.00 a month) went away and will be tacked on our tax bill.
Recently, the Town of WF officially incorporated the new electric rates - for approx. 15 months we were all assesed 8% (I think) "adjustment" on our electric bills before the increase was made official.
End result: My February 2009 Town of WF bill was almost exactly the same amount I paid in February 2001 - but it didn't include garbage or water !!!
I like living here, but quite honestly, it would be almost worth it to move a few miles down the road and get Raleigh's water rate, electric rate and tax rate ! It all adds up !!
Or, live in an unincorporate area of Wake Forest or Wake County and pay County taxes - still have a Wake Forest address ...
You're right, Hawaii alone would be more, I should have said "mainland", but whatever.
Stop and think about how much electricity they use in Hawaii, no A/C, no heat, solar hot water. Now think about how much we use. Our rates would be double the US national average. That is NOT GOOD for business.
This assumes that no other state has any increase which is highly unlikely. Maryland is more than us now and they are increasing. It quite possiblywii stay relative to the way it is now as others deal with the same pricing pressures Progress is dealing with. Make sense?
This is an interesting thread. People voiced their hope for change, knowing all along that energy costs were going to skyrocket or at least were being told by people like me that they were going to and chose not to listen. Now that there is just a little talk of it actually happening, they get their panties in a wad. Maybe this will be a great lesson about thinking before you make up your mind. These inflated costs go well past the initial cost to the consumer. It affects the costs of EVERYTHING and will make companies much less likely to do business in the Triangle or the country in general and opt for going overseas more. Well DUH! Why can't people put 2 & 2 together and come up with 4?
I suspect that the contributors who have expressed angst or outrage about the possibility of rising energy costs in this thread voted for John McCain. I don't think we have a problem with people putting two and two together.

If Cap and Trade is passed in its current form, it is forecasted to cost the average American household $3100/year. I suspect that some people who did not vote for John McCain may be unhappy paying an extra $260 / month for energy. Again, it's nothing more than a middle class tax hike (even though we were promised no tax cuts on those making less than $250k).

Great post. It's too bad people don't actually educate themselves to the reality of the situation, rather than making decisions based on other criteria. If people really knew the extent of what is planned and what the results are going to be, they would probably be shocked. The Triangle became successful by making the area a place that companies wanted to move to. That, my friend, may change in the Triangle and the country as a whole. And when people are paying double and triple for everything, but make less money, who are they going to blame then? I say they should just look in the mirror. I am currently making plans for what will be headed down the road. I see and hear the train. I have decided to get off the tracks now, while others are standing there "hoping" it is not a train.

That train is currently rolling through Michigan. We averaged $300 a month for utilities (electric and natural gas) and DTE wants a 10% rate increase on each?
For what? To pay for "future" power sources aka NUCLEAR. Michigan has been paying for these future nukes for 10 years and nothing has come of it? DTE even has several NUKES and still the utilities increase.
We use too much energy = INCREASE
We conserve and use less energy = INCREASE
The utilities need a guaranteed number of customers to get lower interest rates on loans so the governor guarantees that quota for the utilities= INCREASE.
Cap and Tax will be a disaster for this country if passed and implemented imo.And it will hit the working people living paycheck to paycheck the hardest. The energy companies will pass on to the consumer EVERY single dollar that this cost them. Count on it.
Back in the 60's, we did not have any AC and used window fans. We also hung our clothes outside on the clothesline to dry because we didn't have a clothes dryer. God forbid if you did that today...you would be arrested.
People today have forgotten how our parents and grand parents lived and our society has become too dependent on the modern day convinces of life. We do have choices.... not very popular choices, but we have choices none the less.
I'd like to see what the power companies would do if everyone turned off their power 1-2 days a week, or turned it off all together. That will never happen of course because most people would rather die than give up their modern conveniences and vices that they have become attached to for so long. There are no laws that say you must have power coming into your home or that you have to pay the power company to get it... there are alternatives.
