I am thinking of going to the West End Wine Bar (http://www.westendwinebar.com/index.htm - broken link) in Chapel Hill this weekend. While I am always looking or an excuse to explore a corner of the Triangle, I am curious if anybody here has gone to this Bar already and can share their thoughts on it. We have some great Wine Bars in Raleigh like April & George and The Grape (http://triangle.citysearch.com/profile/44409901/raleigh_nc/the_grape.html - broken link), but I have been looking forward to visiting the West End Wine Bar for some time now.

I guess this is getting back pretty late, but I like the West End Wine Bar. When I have friends from out of town visit (all ages, even parents) I like to take them there because it impresses those who are even used to New York City-type sophisticated places. It's one of the best places for nightlife in Chapel Hill, especially on the roof.

It's now become a coffee shop during the day.

I like it. Its comfortable and generally not too crowded until after 10pm. The patio upstairs is nice if its warm out.

There's also a wine bar in Carrboro called Glasshalfull (sp?) that also serves tapas.

Okay, so I know this is long past the original post, but on a side note, the west end is owned by a good friend of mine from high school. He is a long time chapel hill resident...........and I like the bar! It is a fun place to be.

I used to hang out there on Sunday nights with friends and chat up the staff - they were great, great knowledge of the wines, good recommendations, and generally its not crowded. I miss the original glass windows in the doors though - they were made from wine bottles but are now just normal glass.

Thanks for the input. Although it has been over a year I still haven't made it to the west end wine bar yet, but seeing this thread revived has put it on the top of my list of things to do. Thanks for the input everybody! I'm always up for a new place to have a glass of wine.

how's them photos of Varina-Fuquay working out for you?

Edit: actually wait, holy crap, i think i actually went here! somewhere in the raleigh area i've been, and you haven't? the world has stopped spinning....
anyways, we went on a sunday afternoon when the entire town had emptied to see a game, so it was really empty, and they had run out of a bunch of their wines (or else i have really bad luck picking them) because we basically came at the very end of a busy weekend. but the place was really cool, different areas to hang out in, different floors, the bar guy was friendly and funny, and the wine was good. definitely check it out.
if you go to the 2nd to last post in the stickeyed photo thread here, i think you can see a picture of my wife sticking her butt out just outside the door to the place.
