Wow.....Im quite surprised at this thread. You want rude? Go to California! I lived there all my life and everyone was always in a hurry and not willing to smile and say hi as they hurried by. We are thrilled with how friendly everyone is here! No...they wont be happy every day but the difference here is amazing. We walk through our neighborhood in North Raleigh and most people we pass by say hi and wave. The only place I have run into rude people was on the freeway!
I love California, but I have to agree with this comment. I grew up in Pennsylvania and lived in California for 14 years. Now, I lived in a great neighborhood & town where I knew half of my neighbors and talked to them on a regular basis. So not everyone is unfriendly. However, I definitely saw the coldness from some people who are just concerned about making more money or moving on to the next hip thing.
I've seen people who are constantly wave say Hey Y'all with that sweet tea smile. But they can really care less about you. I've also seen people who are a little quieter but are there in an instant to help. There are people who are "real" and people who are superficial.
And we also have some self-proclaimed "True Southeners", like some of the posters in this thread, who still think the war is going on and everyone above the Mason Dixon line is EVIL
The OP was asking if anyone has had similar expierences, I for one have. I never before have had people ignore a "hello or "how are you today" until I moved here.

Welcome to the land of the malcontents!
On the whole, I like people in this area, as in most areas. I find them no better or worse than other places.
New York and Miami, two supposed bastions of rudeness and sources of many malcontents in the Triangle, are always two places I've always encountered lots of friendly people.

Yup, when in New York I thicken up my accent just a little and I've always gotten great service and a lot of friendly smiles.
I am sure you would find friendly people everywhere in the country. And people who are not. I think to again label an area then complain when it doesn't live up to that label is an error.
I have met and know many natives who are genuinely nice, others who are not. To expect a region to live up to a slogan isn't realistic. It's like thinking all the people that live in California are air-heads or "plastic"; all the people that live in NYC or NJ are like the Sopranos; or all the people in Florida are rude just to name some examples.
I personally have found that people who live in rural areas and smaller towns are more laid back and friendlier. And people in the larger cities seem to be more rushed and stressed. But again that could be in any area of the country.
I also agree that if you are friendly, people are friendly in return. If they don't respond, the heck with them.
Hummmmmm, when I returned back home (N.C.) after my year in W. Africa, I gave myself a 3 mo. vacation in California, Northern California, a few miles north of San Francisco, above Muir Woods (a fabulous place by the way) in the little town of Sebastapol. The people there were very friendly, at least half the town stopped by in my first two weeks, just to say hello and drop off a housewarming gift. It was one of the best three months I ever had.
There are always exceptions to the rule and Sebastapol is a small town up in the hills, very artsy and I know there were a lot of "free spirits" living there when I lived in California. I am talking about regular towns and day to day living - everyone in the corporate world so worried about their "stuff", they rarely would look up and notice the friendly world around them. I just have not seen that here. Even at work, people are friendly and not uptight.
Im glad you enjoyed your time in California - Sebastopol is a great area to spend time.
