Should be Headline News:

It turns out that Raleigh education leaders have been hiding a report released to them by SAS months ago that informs them of an error in their calculations of student data. it seems that an accurate analysis of the data shows that achievement gaps between ED and non-ED are greater in Wake county than in other NC districts. Additionally, ED students who start out as academic equals to non-ED children end up falling behind in Wake county because less is expected of them. They also do not take the more advanced classes that their peers (who are not seen as doomed to failure) take. I guess the Wake leaders did not like the report so they did not disclose it. It is also shocking that the only news story you will see about this is in the News and Observer BLOGS (by reporter Keung Hui)- but not in the actual paper.

Here is the link which also includes a link to the actual report and a summary of the report: WakeEd - SAS and Wake's achievement gap | newsobserver.com blogs [LEFT]

This is very interesting. It doesn't surprise me in the least. Wake has always done what it has wanted for its own reasons. We need to start at the top. Get rid of Del Burns. Then move on to the board. Yesterdays results were promising. Then move on from there. Curriculum, teachers etc.

This is not what the entire article was based on but since were are on the topic of the diversity policy lately I thought I would give my opinion.

The whole F&R/diversity policy was always a cover up to begin with. It never benefited or was meant to benefit the children who are the most important. It was all about money$$$$$. The more performing schools Wake has, the more money it receives. That was the whole idea regarding the shuffling and reassigning of students. Growth was not the entire reason either. The majority of the underperforming students never did any better academically because of this. How sad. Some also use the argument that higher performing students that were reassigned were not challenged to their fullest potential.

Its a sad shame that our children are being used for the districts own selfish needs. Our children are supposed to come first and their education should be a priority.

What does "ED" mean? Educationally deprived? Extremely Dumb? Not everyone knows your abbreviations. Spell it out once in a while then you can use the abbreviation.
"Ecumenically Deficient"

The Blog you link has within it a link to an article in the News Observer from the other day as part of their election day coverage. Here is a link straigh to the article from the other day.
Voters have chance to transform system - Home Page - News & Observer
A recent SAS Institute report found that the way Wake analyzes school performance "tend[s] to camouflage schooling inadequacies for disadvantaged populations." It found that the achievement gap between Wake's low-income and non low-income students was greater than observed in other North Carolina districts.

The report was a response to a Wake school district report that questioned the program developed by SAS that is being used in school districts statewide to analyze school performance.

Right, because no doubt WCPSS has more experts in statistical analysis than SAS

I was pleased to see the election results, but I still don't think things will change any time soon...I'm so thankful that I'll be watching this unfold from "afar".

I was wondering that too. When I hear the term "ED," I tend to think of those Viagra commercials.

You are taking my post out of context and printing what you want. Hmmm where have I seen that before? My post was about the assertion that the News Observer had not covered it when if fact the OP link indicated they had. In addition.
Both Sides Launch Final Offensive In Wake School Board Race - Wake County - MyNC.com. Again here is another news story about it. Why you would make seem that I am siding with the Wake board to make a point would under most circumstances be curious however there does seem to be a trend these days. I would caution all readers that you are getting an interpretation of the SAS report from those with their own agenda (one each side). Hopefully SAS will provide clarification of the totality of their report in the coming weeks.

I was implying nothing about any side you are or are not taking. I simply found it humorous that Wake County school officials are questioning the validity of a statistal program developed by one of the world's leading statistical software companies.

Peace I would agree on the face with that assumption. Wake had from what I read contracted out to SAS to help them for just that very reason. However we are reading interpretations of the report and application by those with a vested interest in proving a point on both sides of the issue. From what I have read about the purpose of the report I would not be surprised if what is now being discussed was taken out of context. From what I could quickly gather the purpose of the SAS project was not to evaluate the value of the busing program but how to best move students to maximize student performance. That is different from raising issues about the validity of the program. The were trying to help the district not move students so often and to help minimize the impact of FREQUENT student movement on student progress. Stay tuned!
