So we are moving to NC at the end of June. We are going this weekend to look at apartments/rental houses. We are in our mid 30s and have 3 kids: 4 year old, 1 year old, 4 month old.
My wife will be completing a medical fellowship at Duke. These are the places we are planning to look:
Apartments (based on ratings at apartmentratings.com):
Durham: Woodland Creek, Evergreens @ Mt. Moriah, Addington Farms
Cary: Alexan Panther Creek, Weston Lakeside
Apex: Avalon Peaks
Chapel Hill: Cosgrove Hill
Neighborhoods for rental homes (based on personal recommendations from acquaintances and message reviews:
Hope Valley Farms
Chancellor's Ridge
Woodcroft
Amberly
Cary Park
Briarcreek
Croasdaile Farms
Any opinions/suggestions about these or other places would be greatly appreciated. We are mainly looking for someplace safe with trails/park within walking distance.

What is your price range? I'd say with that age range, don't even pursue apartments if you don't have to. I have little ones and they will definitely need more room than an apartment can offer. You also wouldn't have to worry about neighbors complaining about your kids making too much noise in a house. This was always a source of stress for me in an apartment.
Also, I think you'll want to narrow down what city you want to be in and go from there. Woodcroft has parks and trails. HVF has nice sidewalks (a rarity in Durham) popular for walkers and joggers, but I'm not sure about trails and parks. Hopefully a HVF resident can chime in on that one.
I agree with mia78 about looking at houses over apartments. I think all the developments you mentioned have good potential and hopefully you will be able to decide what city you want to be in with your visit. We currently live in Cary but used to live in S. Durham and loved both places for different reasons. Woodcroft and HVF are definitely nice and there are several other nice neighborhoods in that area as well. We rent our old house in Durham and have always listed it through Craigslist so I would check that out. There is also something through Duke called the Duke List (google it) that allows Duke employees/students to list houses available for rent. PM me if you have any questions.
