My 8y/o almost stepped on a large Copperhead that was hiding in a small stand of trees in my front yard. I was a little nervous when we moved here about the town of cary law against firing a gun...more so when I heard about the rabid fox (we've seen it now too) that has been running around and now with this snake. Fortunately, my 8yo had enough sense to back away from the snake, but my two year old does not. Any ideas for snake repellent\

I've hear a rabid fox will keep the snakes away, or vice versa.

Usually pretty docile unless disturbed, I would call a pro in to remove it, to keep your kids safe in the yard...

For snakes, spread some moth balls around the perimeter of your property. Of course, you'll have to keep your 2 yr old away from those too!

I wouldn't let a 2 year old out of my sight when playing outside. Best to get a snake book and show him/her pictures and emphasize how never to pick it up or play with it. A curious 2 year old could be easy prey for a rabid fox or a scared snake. Good luck

You can buy commercial snake repellent "Snake Away!" or some other such creative name.. at any of the big box home repair stores. The active ingredient is the same as the stuff mothballs are saturated with (as coastalnc stated) so you can probably just buy that ingredient and save yourself some $. I think you do have to reapply after heavy rains and well, we have had our share.

They'll also keep armadillos away (learned that in FLA when we had a family move in under our sago palm). Could also keep some of your neighbors at bay - LOL!!!

FRAGRANT!

A very large Blacksnake is your friend. If you find one near your house, its not poisonous, YES it will bite, but no venom.

Blacksnakes keep snakes like the Copperhead away.

Had a copperhead come over to see what was going on when I was building a shed. I picked him up with a long stick and tossed him into the woods, but he came slithering right back. Wasn't threatening or anything, just seemed curious. I picked him up and threw him into the bushes again, and this time he stayed there. Living in the country is fun!

Thanks for the suggestions. This is really freaking me out! I have 4 kids and we homeschool so I often send one older child out into ther fenced in yard with the 2 year old while I work with another child. Now I feel uncomfortable doing that. An older child can easily keep a toddler from going out the gate, but I don't trust them to keep him away from a snake that looks interesting. I did show him some pictures of snakes and told him they would bite him and to stay away. But he is my excessively curious kid and he LOVES all animals. I really don't trust him to follow my advice if he came upon a snake.

I have tried to corroborate the belief that black snakes keep copperheads away but havent been able to find anything but hearsay. :-/
