Hello Everyone,

I was born and raised in Rapid and am currently in Minneapolis for college. I will be back for four months during the summer and am trying to think of where I want to work. I HATED my last job so I guess I want to work somewhere fun/cool. An outside job/tour guide would be awesome! I would like to work in the hills, but I can't think of too many places besides in a store in Keystone or The Cosmos (which I definitely don't want to work at). So, have you ever had or heard of a seasonal job in the hills (or Rapid) that you would recommend? I'd be willing to go as far as: Sturgis, Spearfish, Deadwood/Lead, Hill City, Keystone, possibly Hot Springs or Custer if it was a really cool job. Any thoughts or suggestions would be awesome!

Thanks!

One last thing, I don't really care if it pays well, I'm just looking for something fun and time consuming to do over the summer.

1880 train comes to mind. Or something in Custer State Park. My sister worked at the Game Lodge for a couple of summers many years ago.

Those are both great ideas! I completely forgot about Custer State Park and that's not too far.

I worked at Custer State Park during a summer when I was in school. It was a good time, I enjoyed it. I think the pay was (in 2003) 1000/month. That was for 48 hrs of work a week. It was enjoyable to be out there all summer though.

Don't forget Wind Cave National Park. They can always use another tour guide.

You might try some of the restaurants like the Railhead, or Keystone House, etc. too. Money and hours could be better than $1000/month for 48 hours.

It might be too late for the NPS postings - I think most of ours (Jewel Cave) are filled. You might also try the concessionaire at Mount Rushmore - Xanterra Parks & Resorts. Don't wait, though! They were hiring two weeks ago, but they fill fast! If you don't have something secured in the next couple of weeks with the parks, you will probably end up elsewhere. Custer State Park (and other) seasonal positions can be found here: Work for Us - South Dakota Bureau of Human Resources

Good luck!

No problem! Best of luck finding something - remember, Custer State Park has concessioners, too. I think all the lodges are run through them, and possibly the tour businesses.

Get on a hotshot or engine crew and go fight fires. You could go all over the country.
