I predict the trend that will die out in several years is the painting of walls with bold colors like red, deep orange, canary yellow etc. And sometimes they paint a wall within one room a bold color while the rest of the room is another color. Or paint the ceiling a color besides white. Lots of color contrasting. In 20 years, people will look back and say "what the hell?". It looks too cartoonish.
I think off-whites and pastels are more timeless.
All of our houses have had cottage white walls or last one, which was pale yellow. Looked good w/ all of the wood floors, wood trims. I agree, lighter is better, for me anyways. Not a fan of differently colored walls, although I try to be open minded about it, just doesn't do it for me, not horrible, just not for me.

It can look great if it's done right. And it's not really a current trend...have seen it back in the mid-1980s.
Oh my gosh, that is what the "beautiful" wallpaper is in our study--GRASSCLOTH. The pieces of dust that get stuck in it make it all the more awesome!! I love having to dust my walls. I'm sure it's going to be a lot of fun to remove too
Compact Fluorescent (CFL) bulbs. They are great now to replace incandescent bulbs but within ten years the LED bulbs will cost about the same. Already more efficient and longer lasting than the CFL, some are suitable for dimming as well.
The wood is beautiful but the decor does nothing to complement it. I'm a fan of decorating the house in the style of the house, or something that blends with the architecture and doesn't fight it. All I see when I look at these photos is a 1900 house with furniture that looks like Ikea. But I agree, that is some impressive woodwork and it would be a crime to paint over it when it's in such good shape.
