Do you at least rent it out throughout the year?
That's kind of the point of a vacation home. Many people don't even get 6-8 weeks a year out of their vacation homes, and most will rent it the rest of the year unless they're wealthy enough not to need to.

a) Your poll makes no sense
2) If I had the money to buy a vacation home, the expense of getting there would be the least of my worries.

Ocean City NJ area is now my primary home its a good time all summer long in OCNJ. Big Pine Key Florida is where I purchased my vacation/retirement home. Weather its driving 1400 miles or flying 2.5 hrs to Ft Lauderdale and driving the 3 hours down US 1 through the Florida keys getting there is always an adventure. the year round warm/hot weather, great fishing, scuba diving, Bahia Honda state park and the warm tropical waters make up for all the hassle and inconvenience of getting to my little piece of paradise. its all in where you wanna be if you are factoring the getting there part you are limiting your choices. find the area/place that you love(and can afford) and buy your vacation house.

The question in the poll does not make sense. And it appears that the OP has left the building.

how is it that everyone was able to have a conversation about this thread then? Maybe because it DOES make sense.

I suppose it would depend on how much money you have to get to your vacation home. If you can afford to fly back and forth, then have it any where you want. Trust me, if I lived in CA and could afford it, I'd have a home in Hawaii no question. And, I'd go as often as possible.

On the other hand, if you are driving, I say at least make it close enough that you can go for the weekend.

We do have a 2nd home (wow - that sounds SO weird). It's new to us - just since December. We bought my Aunt and Uncle's mountain cabin - about 3 hours away. It's just the right distance. I mean, closer would be better, but 3 hours is not too long.

It doesn't make sense to me to have a vacation home you can't actually enjoy.
