An additional tax attached to the new homes for approximately 30 years to pay for schools, roads, sewage system, ..etc... Is is normally $2000 to $6000 a year and it is to pay off the bonds. Previously builders pay for this but now they put this onto the buyers. Almost all new houses in Irvine have this tax.

Wow...maybe you should consider relocating to Atlanta. Our previous house, which we sold in February for just under $550k. It has 5200 sq ft, with a dock on a 400 acre lake.

I had heard that CA prices were high but I had no idea.

I just checked with payscale, a salary of $120k in Orange County is the same as an $82k salary in Atlanta. However, salaries in Orange County is only around 10% higher while the cost of living is 45% higher, mainly due to high home prices.

I paid less than half of that for over 2500 sqft in an excellent neighborhood. I'm scared to think how close the property taxes on that might come to matching my mortgage.

As another suggestion (that some people will hate), you could consider limiting yourself to 3 people living in the house unless you want the children to share a bedroom. (Assuming neither of the adults is already pregnant)

Those prices are just insane. I really have a hard time envisioning what an entire city of people can do to produce enough economic wealth to justify spending so much money on a house. In short, they can't all be doctors/engineers.
No joke. I thought I had clicked the link before and I hadn't. $538K for 1128 sq ft? But, hey, that's Cali for you, way overpriced for what you get. I don't understand how people can afford to live there without a super high paying Silicon Valleyesque job. And certainly not everyone has those. I lived in San Francisco for about two seconds. Although I truly love San Francisco, and lived nearby as a kid with my dad, I just couldn't afford it. Despite getting a good job offer immediately, I couldn't pay my rent.

That listing is a great example of how they can manipulate the images based on perspective. Just compare these two. The first one makes the kitchen look pretty spacious but the second one shows just how small it really is and it will be even tighter in there once you have a fridge.

It's a nice house and I think could work for a couple but I don't see it for a family of 4.

So now a 1,000 $538,000 home seems more comfy than a 1,300 $638,000 home?

thanks,
From the listing it sounds like you are paying a premium for the single story. If you are willing to live in a two story, there's a "nearby listing" (http://www.realtor.com/realestateand...4_M12215-15308) that has been on the market for a while and you might be able to get for the same price.

I didn't see this because I was searching for homes under $550k. I will check it out but will not offer more than $540k. That is my upper limit.
