I would say it's an investment that can make a lot of sense in some very specific situations, and not for most others.

Ten percent a year is a really good payoff. But how many, realistically, can get that?

So go in with your eyes open, and check the numbers twice. Then twice again.

It's a poor investment for much of the country but a fantastic investment for some parts of the country. It has nothing to do with how much sun your state gets but everything to do with cost of electricity, local government incentives, and whether your power company does net metering.

In lower NY state, 5-6 year break-even then 14+ years of straight profit. Not many investments like that in the world.

Yep. I belong to a (nation-wide) solar discussion thread, and half of the conversation is on weird TOU rules, and net metering, and other government restrictions.

I'm lucky this isn't an issue in Texas.
