I imagine you are feeling the sting of being rejected. It's a natural reaction. What is so wrong or bad or insufficient about me that you deem me unfit for membership? I know that's how I'd be feeling.

But heed the advice of others and let it go. It's a minor slight against you by some strangers. In a week or two you probably won't even care and will find a better place to live. A lawsuit will just attach this negativity to your life for months or even years. Along with adding a boatload of expenses and stresses.

I'm in California and I inquired about residency at a membership-based co-living agency...

For those that don't know, it's basically a building where people share common areas and bathrooms and sleep in pods...and they also have private rooms (which is what I was interested in)

So they directed me to the website to apply, and there was some type of system error on their website that was making the application page malfunction....

I notified them of the problem and they told me they would go ahead and schedule me for a virtual tour and they will have the website fixed in the meantime...

So we have a quick tour and they ask me a few questions. So today I receive an email from the girl that gave me a tour that they rejected me for membership. And I'm baffled because the girl and I had a very brief tour and I didn't even get to apply because the website is down????

I also don't look weird and didn't say or do anything weird on the virtual tour so I'm confused???

Is it legal to deny some before they even apply?? I didn't even make it to the application? Not even a background check, credit check, or income inquiry?????

This can't be legal.... ESPECIALLY IN California????
First of all, e-mail her back and ask the reason you were declined membership.
If you are in a protected class and want to pursue further, file a complaint with

I'm guessing they don't want anyone so sensitive that they will immediately sue anytime their feelings are hurt.

They are not required to give you a reason, with the only exception being if the rejection is based upon your credit report. Since they didn't pull a credit report, that doesn't apply.

You don't meet their rental criteria, whatever that is. Or possibly someone who applied before you did got accepted and there is no longer a vacancy.

Move on. Find some place else to rent.

In your other thread about your ex-wife, you finally came out and said you "suffer from ASPD" ... anti-social personality disorder, also known as sociopathy. https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-...s/syc-20353928 : "Antisocial personality disorder, sometimes called sociopathy, is a mental disorder in which a person consistently shows no regard for right and wrong and ignores the rights and feelings of others. People with antisocial personality disorder tend to antagonize, manipulate or treat others harshly or with callous indifference. They show no guilt or remorse for their behavior."
The picture is coming into focus here.

By any chance Justaguy, did you come on to the woman doing the interview?

“Butt-hurt” isn’t actually damage-worthy. Move along, nothing to see here.

If true - than the ASPD person in general should avoid social living situations- like in this case.
Due to the nature of the disorder the person could unintentionally hurt or disregard people’s feelings - it would change the dynamics of the living community.

This condition would explain why the OP can not understand why he was rejected as he might not be tuned into people and how his reactions manifested his condition.

To the OP: find a living arrangement where you don’t face many daily social interactions

Can someone tell me what anti-discrimination laws exist for clubs offering memberships to the public?

Discrimination laws protect people who are in a protected class of people. Not all discrimination is illegal. Only discrimination against a protected class for illegal reasons. Thus, you can discriminate against a black person because they are rude, or short, or they smell like pot. However you cannot discriminate against hem for any characteristics of being black.

Protected classes are race, gender, age, sexual preference, probably some others that I am not thinking of. It also varies from state to state. Within those classifications, usually only certain subgroups are protected. For example, you are not going to get anywhere claiming someone discriminated agaisnt you because you are white.

I wonder if the fact that you're a musician was an issue with them, as they were worried about you making noise and disrupting their peace and quiet.
