Sun City AZ--no school taxes, still runs .5% or so. Thailand there is none.

Places like Florida & California have some measures of protection against assessing rising property values upon which taxes are based. Florida, of which I am more familiar, has what is known as the "save our homes" amendment which limits assessing homesteaded residences by more than 3% per year. Millage rates, however, can be raised by local legislating bodies (counties and cities).

If you think, however, that things will turn so terribly bad here in terms of a type of hyperinflation which will allow the government to take everyone's properties (though, who then will pay the property taxes if they do?) then you might consider how rough things will get outside of this country, both for the natives there, and for how they might treat Americans who they just might blame.

As to this being a free country. Of course it is. The government does not insist that you pay property taxes, assuming, of course, that you are a church.

According to Which has more $$$ : Wal-Mart or the Catholic Church ?? - Yahoo! Answers

"The Vatican is by far the largest holder of land titles for any organisation or government in the world with visible title to around US $316 Billion of property (churches, schools, hospitals etc) and around US $2,623 Billion of investment property hidden in an extremely complex networks of hundreds of thousands of trusts and front companies"

Perhaps if some of that was taxed...just sayin'.

California still hits homeowners with taxes on a per home basis. Park lighting, etc....they hit the lower valued homes the most.

I believe there are virtually no property taxes in Tunica, MS due to all the gaming tax they receive in their little county. There are full services to boot.

Students in our district come from Reeds Spring, Branson West, Kimberling City, and Cape Fair. There are approximately 2120 students in K-12. Aside from our traditional K-12 classes, our school district also has the Gibson Technical Center, the Strohm Early Childhood Center, and the New Horizons Alternative School"
