Yesterday, I mixed up the ingredients for this recipe found online and refrigerated the mixture overnight. It's too bland. Recipe: one cup buttermilk, one cup mayo, 4 oz crumbled blue cheese, one eighth tsp garlic powder, one eighth tsp black pepper.

Am going to add more garlic powder, but, does anyone know how to make it less bland, although, not with a bite to it.

Try with equal parts sour cream, buttermilk, and mayo and add 4 ounces of blue cheese for every cup of the sour cream/buttermilk/mayo mixture. Also, hit it with a few shakes of worcestershire sauce and you can brighten it with a bit of vinegar.

I prefer to take a Ranch Dressing recipe and add blue cheese to it.

Are you using a good blue cheese? The cheaper ones can be bland. In fact using a good cheese, you might have to reduce it as it's strong and pugently delish Also a pinch of salt and acid like others said will help.

I love my blue cheese recipe. I eat it with everything beside salad. Turkey, burgers, steak, bread sticks, fried chicken fingers, etc.
My recipe is bold enough to get you right in the throat glands:

1/4 cup good blue cheese, crumbled
3 TBSP. light cream, or half and half
1/2 cup of mayonnaise (I use Helmann's exclusively)
pinch of salt
pinch of fresh ground black pepper
1 tsp mustard (I use Gulden's for this recipe)
1/4 cup red wine vinegar
6 TBSP. vegetable or canola oil

Whisk everything but the cheese and oil together until combined. Briskly whisk in the oil gradually until combined. Finally, gently stir in the crumbled blue cheese. Cover and chill at least 1 hour before serving. Stir again just before serving.
Will keep about 5 days, if it lasts that long, covered and refridgerated.

Not to hi-jack the thread, but is there a decent commercial Blue Cheese Dressing.

From many years ago i eat Maries, but over the years it has become just a jar of creamy sauce with very little blue cheese. Very mundane and uninteresting. Is there a prepared option?

THX!

Everyone has his/her own version but this is how I make it and it is one thing I get request for a lot.

equal amounts of buttermilk, sour cream and mayo: I usually use about 1/2 c of each
4 oz of blue cheese (that is about right) maybe a little more, maybe 6 oz
seasoning salt (about 1 tsp) 1/4 tsp of pepper
3 gloves of grated garlic
a splash of lemon juice and a splash of olive oil.

I make blue cheese dressing from scratch with a homemade "mayonnaise". To get the restaurant flavor, you need lemon juice, celery, onion, Worcestershire sauce.

You definitely need some acid, either lemon or salad vinegar.

Also, blue cheeses vary from pungent to quite mild. I suggest asking someone at the cheese counter in your market. For dressing, which gets diluted with a lot of other dairy, you want a strong cheese.

Another option is to make a very simple vinaigrette and sprinkle the cheese on top.
