I don't know when it started, but "we" have created a society where people--especially, 30 to 50 year old females--MUST be cool. So, when all else fails "we" saddle up the sex, good looks and tropical, fruity booze look. At any cost. It usually costs back time with a good man and "me, choose me, I'm your friend," relationships.
I think people might as well not say "I keep it real" at all because it just makes them look like they're trying to hide something. For example, if a woman is secretly seeing someone, but is trying to get layed by another man, she can say "I keep it real" to take the attention off of everything else about her. Or in other words: She's trying to say "I'm so real that you really don't have to ask me any questions or asume anything about me, because I don't lie. Since I said that I keep it real, there's nothing you don't know." It to me makes them look more suspicious of cheating and being shady.
Nobody is real. Only the severely retarded, or the mentally deranged. Everyone else "puts on an act". I do it, you do it, "real" people do it even more. And, a lesson, those that say "I tell it like it is" are the exact same people who cannot accept being told "how it is". Those who like to dish it out are the same people who cannot take it.
So true, those who dish can`t take it when it comes back to them. Why is that? Then when you do give it back to them, there is always an excuse(or justification) for themselves.
We are all fake. Most of our life is a sham and I hate it when people pretend that they don't care what a person looks like and they are above it. That is just yet another level of fakeness.

I am by no means a shrink, but I do have a bachelors degree in psychology :-]. I believe that there are 2 classifications of people that are in the "can dish it out but can't take it" category. First are the narcissistic folks - those that are absorbed in themselves and see themselves as God's gift to humanity. Second are the insecure - they "get off" so to speak "telling it like it is" - makes them feel important, in command. However, when it comes back at them, the insecurity rains down on them - thus the anger, defensiveness and denial.
I see that you are in Texas. There are a lot of horrible people there.
