It is the manlyman forum on Tuesday & Thursday nights when their mothers let them stay on the computer till 11pm.

Other nights they aren't allowed to stay on late due to the PG13 rating.

That has always been my philosophy about women.

Understanding that beautiful creations can sometimes be dangerous (mountains, storms, sea) but understanding or attempting to understand helps mitigate the danger.

My mom has a picture of her grandmother as a young woman, standing on the porch behind her mother. My great-great-grandmother has the typical pinched, disapproving look on her face, but my great-grandmother is laughing. My mom also has a photo of her from about the same time, riding a little tricycle and grinning. Apparently my great-grandmother was a bit of a red-headed hellion. I only knew her as an old woman, and she died when I was 16, which makes me sad. I wish I had known her better.

I have a lot of old black and white, what they call, tin-plate pictures. Everyone's dressed like Colonial America and there is a reason why no one is smiling in any of those photos. I learned this in a photography class in college.

An image is transfered dark or light grades to film based, in part, on the amount of light that enters the lense (shutter speed) to allow a lot of light in the shutter must be completely open, smaller if you wanted a darker photo. Film speed in modern cameras also contributed to helping this.

With the old accordian looking cameras they used they had to leave the shutter open for a long, long time to capture the image with the light, but no one could move even an inch while the 10 minutes were going by. Try and hold a smile for 10 minutes and what ended up happening is it showed up blurred on your face if you stopped smiling. So to alleviate the problem they just had people pose with a straight face to avoid blurred movement.

And all this time I thought everyone from that era was just constipated.

I believe they also used braces that ran up the back and onto the neck, to help steady the subjects. Lots of fun.
