Don't be with someone because of what they can do for you."
But, don't a lot of people love someone because of what they can do for them?
Take, for example, the free credit report commercials, with the guy playing the guitar. The one where he's singing about how he married his dream girl but she didn't tell him her credit was bad. And if he knew she had bad credit, he'd be a happy bachelor with a dog and a yard.

Apparently, "true love" does not prevail.

I think all human beings are driven by self-interest, until they are really in love. Attraction, companionship, intellectual stimulation... these are all the things that turn us on mentally and/or physically and keep us interested in someone.
When that interest turns into "true love", then it seems that self-interest is no longer a primary factor. That's when pure emotion kicks in. Although everyone wants to truly be in love, it has the potential to be hurtful when it blinds us to what we as individuals need or want.
You need love, understanding, common interests, mutual attraction, communication, gets along with most, patience(life is tough), willing to share, want similar things, and loyalty.
i hate those commercials. in fact i hate all those types of commercials. the ones made by people my age trying to be snarky and "funny" and ironic with a guy with tousled hair. i feel even more manipulated by those than any other. its like they're trying to sidle up to a certain age group and appeal to them- pick their pockets-while saying, "hey, i'm cool, just like you!" whatever. don't base your philosophy on commercials. unless its the ones they show on SNL. "Crystal Gravy" anyone?
The problem with "love" is that most people believe it's simply that ridiculous, intense passion and all encompassing intensity... which is often caused by tension and conflict aka the roller coaster ride of highs and lows. Like another poster said, compatibility is very important for a relationship to stand the test of time. You both have to share similar world views and want the same stuff out of life or else there will be strife.
