I don't quite get how this could have been handled any differently. If you're out on a date and you see some stranger you're attracted to you can't exactly just say "Oh, I see this hot guy, goodbye" now can you? I know women don't appreciate it when their boyfriends or dates eyeballs start popping out when a pretty woman walks by and even if you're going to dump the guy you were on a date with I would think that you owe him the simple courtesy of not gawking at other guys when you're with him. Just my opinion.
