I'd say that people stereotype as a SURVIVAL tool. You have to make judgments all the time. I hope people are JUDGING BIG TIME when they walk down a dark alley or are in a multi-level parking structure at night. You'd better be JUDGING BIG TIME when you are interviewing someone, or they are interviewing you. "Eff" political correctness. What I've found from my quick studies about people I meet is that I'm right 90% of the time and wrong 10% of the time, more or less. There, it's not foolproof, but it's often useful. That's why it's common.
