Beloved sounds too serious ( but I think I may have to resort to this one)
This IS a real dilemma past certain age. I agree - all of the above sound ridiculous, but I don't have any better suggestions. If I ever have this problem, maybe I'll call him "my tomcat"!

To me, "dating," for me, provides a visual of proms and malt shop dates from the 40s where Norman Rockwell would depict a boy and girl sharing a malt with two straws. Do you use this word? Are there regional variations? I know that young black girls use "talking to" to mean "going out"/"dating."

Discuss.
I often interpret dating as meaning the couple has just started the relationship and that it isn't really serious.

Seeing meant, to me anyway, that they were in a committed relationship.

[then again, maybe the words are synonymous ]

Must be regional because the word "date" doesn't have any archaic/dumb connotations to me. I should mention that I'm not huge into the "dating scene" and prefer to just get to know people as friends before Id ate them, but I do know people that date in a very modern and meaningful way.

Lol. I don't date all my friends, but all the people I've dated were friends first.

Not quite, hon, like I said, I didn't even hear this word used in HS, nor in college. I first heard it across the country, while working in Atlanta.

Partner sounds gay?

I'd think that boyfriend/girlfriend or partner sounds fine as a descriptive term -- those are the ones I hear very often.
