Sure there are some that do for entertainment. We get wacky threads also on controversial issues as well so our reactions can be viewed. I think there is more of the latter actually.

Happens all the time I think. As someone else has said, its trolling.

What I just cant get my head wrapped around though, is how regular users sometimes create new accounts to post something that I guess they are embarassed to post from their regular account.

When you get first time posters posting ridiculous questions, you almost always know that its someone who is a regular around here who just created that new account to post that specific question.

Besides, I'd guess that over 90% of the members here found CD by looking up city specific info and just stumbled upon the forums.

I'm sure many make up stories, but sometimes truth is stranger than fiction. I know I have a few stories that may sound unbelievable as I have lived a pretty full life with many unique "characters" in it. I'm sure when I relate some of the things I've done/people I've met, some would find it unbelievable.

The stories I doubt are the ones where the characters are always the same, always one-dimensional (e.g. all the women are gold-diggers, all older married women are not into sex, all older men would cheat w/a prostitute, etc.. etc... etc.). It makes me think the poster is either making up stories, or is sheltered with not as much life experience, or can not fully interpret/read people. People are a lot more complicated than the caricatures often portrayed on C-D.

A good rule of thumb is always to take anecdotal evidence for what it is (whether or not you think it is "true.") Anecdotes are not generalizations, but what happened in a specific set of conditions and circumstances with specific people.

Of course they do. Just like in the real world, people will embellish things. Everyone knows who they are. Ok, I have a confession. I'm not 61, I'm 61 1/2. I feel better now.

People have been "outed" on this board when they've posted two totally different stories at different times. I don't remember the exact scenario, but a guy went from looking for a girlfriend to being married for a year in a span of three months. I don't think he came back to defend himself.

A lot of first time posters are probably stretching the truth. The regulars probably lie a lot less.

With so many anecdotes, generalizations and assumptions its best to take good amount of stuff with a grain of salt.

Also the world is a crazy place a crazy crazy place.

Of course they make up stories from time to time. Gotta keep readers coming to the forum.

That's like asking if all the letters to Penthouse are true.

Even if the story isn't true, some of the answers can be helpful to someone in a similar situation. That's why I always give the benefit of the doubt to any new poster. The fun part comes in when you see a thread (i.e., //www.city-data.com/forum/relat...d-cheated.html), and then another thread from the other side (//www.city-data.com/forum/relat...taring-me.html) Are both true, one fake or both fake? It's up to you to decide.
