I've known women who have kept the last name of ex-husband when there are mutual children involved. But what if there are no children involved from the marriage? Why wouldn't a woman revert back to her maiden name?

Maybe she established her career with her married name.

If I divorced I wouldn't go back to my last name. I'd create a new one

Because name change after a divorce can be such a hassle. Lots of paper work.

I know some women who keep their ex husband's last name because it is a much nicer name than their maiden names.

I didn't even my ex the option of keeping my last name. I put it in the stipulations and she didn't argue. I didn't ask what her wishes were. The other BS paperwork she had to go through was worthwhile.

If she made a lot of professional contacts with her married name, it would be a pain in the rear to re-introduce herself to all her colleagues/clients with a new name and to expect them to remember.

~if she has children, to keep the same last name as them.

~professionally keeps last name to avoid talking about the divorce.

~married a long time and used name professionally as well.

~married name flows better with given name.

~ethnicity of married name/want to send out a certain vibe, personally and/or professionally.

~maiden name was hard to pronounce/spell

~married name is just overall better than their maiden so they opted to keep it instead.

Might depend on credentials earned, professional reputation garnered, etc. under a particular name.

When I was in print journalism, I knew a newspaper reporter that had won many awards and been noted with acclaim, and after a divorce, opted to go with the name that was on all her bylines. If your name is your professional brand, why change it?

Also, doing a name change is a pain in the butt. Some don't care enough to go through that hassle.
