Why do they want to feel protected? Um... because they're girls? Hello?
Protect herself? Are you serious? Against a 200+ lb. mugger or rapist? Are you aware that men's muscle power is much greater than women's, and that height has nothing to do with it? Guys who are 5' tall are way stronger than women who are 6' tall, unless those women are bodybuilders and the men don't work out at all. At least, on Planet Earth that's the way it works. Where are you from?
Well if guys who are 5" tall are stronger than girls who are 6" tall, why won't the 6" girl date the guy who is 5" tall?
And say things like "Well I need someone taller to protect me! I can't stand towering over him and he looks like a weak shrimp!"
I mentioned this in another thread, but the chances that a large man will domestically abuse and murder a woman is MUCH more statistically likely than him being able to protect her from any threat that would have done her any real harm.
But if her mate were a smaller man, she'd at least have a fighting chance.
So, OP, that's your answer. It's a social construct. Just let the women have what they want.

Are you suggesting that girls want tall guys because everyone else wants tall guys and they are following the "trend"?
If you are a short girl, I understand the need to feel protected. You are 5 foot flat and 90lbs...anyone can pick you up and throw you like a rag doll. You are pretty much the size of a kid and thus you want a big guy to protect you.
However, if you are a tall girl...e.g. 5"11, 145 lbs...why do you NEED to feel protected? Shouldn't you be able to protect yourself?
I thought that we are moving towards an equal society where there is no "protector" or "provider" roles anymore...
Because I'm still a woman, and it feels nice to be protected by a guy. Biological urges don't have a height limit.
