So I have a relative who grew up in the South & they pay attention to the most trivolous stuff between men & women IMO . He was talking about a man who walks in front of his wife is not worth his salt or if a man walks with his wife he should walk closer to the cars and her more to the curb. I apply the same rules to my stepson but it never occured to me that thats how grown couples walk as well.

FWIW, I walk on the curb side. I figure if we're gonna get splashed, or even hit, I'd rather it be me than her.

I think millionaire was trying to say something like "men walk closer to the street [where the cars are] and women walk closer to the buildings [confusing sidewalk with curb]."

That's pretty much old-school chivalry. My dad always walks closest to the street with my mom--it's up there with opening doors and letting the woman walk through first.

I am born and raised in the Southeast and I think it is ridiculous.

This is not a "southern" thing - it's just a gentleman thing.
Somewhere along the way you were just never taught it, or never learned it
You keep doing that. Maybe the words will come out.
