We treat people so differently once we find out what age they are. Even if it's someone who has a job, own car, own house, etc, all of that goes out the window if it's someone much younger than you because we assume that we're at completely different places in life and want completely different things without having enough conversations to find out for sure.
There are ways to prove you're over 21 without giving the exact number, I think. So if that's all that matters, then why not just stick to that and not the number?
I feel like we block out a lot of good people we might meet because we let one number and a list of assumptions get in the way.
Personally, I don't think that age is just a number. It's more than that. Yes - someone can be mature for their age and someone can be immature for their age - but their age still plays a role in who they are. I have friends of all ages - but if I'm going to date someone, I would still like to know how old they are. And yes, their age would influence how I feel about them. If I get the sense that someone is a bit immature - it's one thing if we are both 22. He'll probably grow out of it in some ways. However, if I'm 22 and he's 35 and he's a bit immature - that's a different story.

Yes, this. There are some behaviors and shenanigans that I expect of a certain age demographic that, while unappealing, is at least somewhat understandable. A certain mentality that comes with certain stages of life.
It is less appealing in other, older, demographics. But age is important to me due to the fact that the demographic I was into was at a similar stage of life, in many cases, and were more likely to be on a similar intellectual plane. I never came across anyone in my age range that met those criteria.
My girlfriend is quite a bit older than me, I don't have any issues with it. If anything it makes me happy bexause there's less possibility she will get fat
of course a lot of guys will claim 'age is nothing but a number' that's because they like to get with young girls, teeny boppers if it was legal.
Of course women would make these kind of statements [especially older ones] you know, anything over 30, LOL.
