If you miss a night of TV on the following day do you feel you missed something? personally unless its something out standing I don't remember it anyways.
If I spend time cooking something from scratch instead of a throw together meal to catch a show everyone in the house notices. If I miss tv to take everyone to the Tennis courts and we run our butts off we are all much happier with the throw together meal I needed to make to afford the time. I pay around $175 a month for a phone, TV, DSL package and although I have no intensions of turning it off I would much rather enjoy my families company or do something special than to mindlessly blow hours viewing life through someone elses eyes. I believe balance of stimuli is why we sleep so well and appreciate what we have.
I'm not a big TV watcher.
We're empty nesters so we can pretty much do what we want to do within time restraints from the jobs of course.
Husband goes to bed at 7:30-8 as he gets up at 3:30 everyday, so the TV and/or computer is pretty much mine the rest of the evening.
I find more and more I just turn it all off, piddle in the kitchen maybe prepping something for the next evening's meal, write a note (handwritten btw) to my granddaughter, or just read a book.
I find I'm much more relaxed and usually fall right to sleep.
Now when the new season of House and Bones start....I'll make the exception. lol
I havent had TV in about 8 years. I do ocassionaly rent a DVD. I still cant seem to get all my chores done, I dont know how I got anything accomplished when I did have cable.
We don't have cable and watch almost no television but do watch videos. Anytime I find myself sucked into watching a TV show I feel like I've thrown away valuable time. I have rented episodes of 2 television series that were recommended and enjoyed those. Without commercials and fast-forwarding through the credits seems to make it better to me.
There are some things that are better the old fashioned way. Home cooked meals from scratch, no microwave. Old fashioned disciplined kids, because these days you cant seem to punish one without going to jail, why do you think there are so many younger and younger criminals. But when it comes to 'some' things....sometimes trying something new turns out more interesting than expected. (A new meal, maybe, or a new movie......)

Yes - I missed having my brain cells deteriorated.
The old-fashioned way...I always believed I was born 200 years too late, so you're preaching to the choir here. I despise phones, use them as little as possible. Don't like most TV shows. Don't like being a spectator - much rather be a participant. Don't eat fast food.
We have digital cable, a Sony Blu Ray player & an HD projector coming out of the ceiling on a stalk. It projects onto a 92" motorized screen that drops down from further up the wall. Do I watch a lot of TV? No I actually watch very little. My wife is a news junkie.

This thread reminds me of a card I once saw. It was one of those retro, 1950's type card. Anyway, this couple was looking at a bank of new TV's and the salesman says to them, "Loos at it this way, you'll never have to talk to each other again". Both of the couple exlaim, 'We'll take it!".
