Neither do I, but apparently that's when all the important info is catalogued in our minds, including in infancy... That's what determines attraction (to the familiar, be it good or bad) and that's what makes us act out when our buttons are being pushed. I've seen it described in various terms - old brain, little you, etc. - but it's the same basic concept.

Here's a brief summary of this author's ideas:

Imago - A New Way To Love

Btw, he thinks the power struggle is supposed to end, too. Too bad very few of us wait to see if it's true.

Why? Did I ever say I love them or something...?!

Well, "cute" is not exactly my first choice, either (that's why I put it at the end), but still better than "hot chick"!

Well thinking back, they say we try to find traits similar to our parents I think and I do remember my mother being loving when I was around that age so I think that's why I'd ultimately would seek out partners who had a warm compassion about them...

As far as what pushes our buttons, what I tend to feel uncomfortable around is alot of yelling and arguing so maybe some of that went on when I was younger and I do recall eventually butting heads with mom later too

Yeah, exactly - the traits of our parents/caregivers. All of them, though, positive AND negative. Can't pick and choose... And let's not forget - our OWN negative traits...
