thanks, I can always come back after 6 months, and re evaluate things, see where things are at. I may be at a point where if I see a deal, take it, it would only be 6 months of paying or whatever, much more palatable than a whole year. they have this thing called the internet that I can use to keep up with! ha! ha! real estate news and what not.

I'm leaning heavily towards it, my problem is I try to think of too many things at once. I need to pay off debt then, go for the trip or the house. the trip seems to be winning out!!!!
Ok...as I see it...1) pay off debt, 2) trip, 3) house, in that order...and you're right, the dating situation can't be much worse than here!!! lol...Now I'm gonna cry..... Speaking of Scotsman in kilts, the best "date" I've had in years was the five days back in March I spent in Dallas with a guy from Scotland I met online (I have a picture of him in his kilt stored in my computer!!) Best guy I've met in years but there's an ocean between us.. Maybe I'll have to come visit you in England and I'll have him introduce you to his Scottish kilt-wearing friends and we'll both be happy!! God I miss his accent...

Go to the UK. You can always buy a house at some point in the future. Yu said you'd be gone a year. I don't see things making a drastic change for the better in a year's time. Besides, what if while you're over there, you fall in love with the place and don't want to come back here -or you fall head over heels for some hot Mr. Right and you don't want to come back? There will always be opportunity to buy a house here, but the chanse to work in the UK may never come yor way again! Best of luck in your decision!

Go to the UK. I worked in Germany for three years from 1999 to 2002 and LOVED it (well, I hated the job but loved living in Europe). I got to see and do so many amazing things.

Travel to Paris!

And yes, fund your IRA. I wish I had a lot more money to plow into the market right now. Buy low, sell high (and it's looooowwww right now).

How 'bout going to the UK now and then buying a house toward the end of this year to get the 2009 tax break? You could do a lot of research online, fly back on a quick trip to tour houses and sign papers before Dec. 31.

Forget about houses and go live your life and have fun! As you said, if you come back... Who knows... maybe the love of your life is there... Sometimes I wonder why I hung this albatross on my neck. My damn dream of having a nice house and (if I have to be completely honest) to prove to people who don't matter "I can do it"! "Nice" is a bit hard to do on a single income. Not that I'm going anywhere, but it interfered with the finances quite a bit, not to mention I'd lose my shirt should I need to sell it for whatever reason. And there are so many things to do that not every single woman is skilled to do, meaning you have to pay for them... In other words, it's a bottomless pit! I also made myself a "suburban single," which is not the best idea. While the area is very pretty and safe, it's far from social life, but at the time I made the decision I was pretty much planning to be a zombie... Of course, you don't have to make my mistakes, but I'm just saying...

The houses in the US aren't going anywhere! No need to be tied to one at this time, IMO.

Julia has a good point below, too.

I have the chance to work in the UK, my job is in demand there. I think it would be a great opportunity for me, I have never been to the UK and I love to travel. This would be for at least a year. Financially, it will be a bit of a challenge that while I will be making decent money based on their local wages, I will have more expenses (rent, higher taxes, etc) to consider and maybe not as much "disposable" income to travel around Europe or whatever. Ok, the other thing is I also want to buy a house. I am currently working of paying off debts so I can buy a home with little to no debt.
The issue I'm having is, 1) should I just go to the UK, have a wonderful experience or 2) buy a home first? I'm afraid I may miss tax benefits or rate decreases, etc. and when I get back, the housing market will be back to "normal" with no deals or breaks to be had??

Any thoughts?
p.s.- I considered buying a home and renting it out while I was gone, but if disaster strikes, it will be so hard to solve anything while overseas.
An opportunity like this may come once in a lifetime. Grab it! Houses can wait. You can have a house forever later on. Don't let a house bog you down before you even buy one!
