You are also fighting his pride. If he was willing to swallow that, he could just dress nice and head out to the commercial district and go door-to-door looking for minimum wage.

I did that once, the 6th place owner was so impressed that I was willing to do this, that he gave me a job starting that very evening. Once you have a job, it's so much easier to look for a better one.
