So how is some people have many friends (not acquaintances nor just friends but best friends you can rely upon)?
That must be cool sometimes... your close friends being there if there is something bothering you. I guess that's what friends are for.
I can't stand overly popular people. They always have it so easy.

Sometimes it's cool to actually have best friends (not acquaintances, nor just friends but best friends you can rely on).
Just be nice to everyone and you'll get lots of friends. I have never considered myself "popular", but I have dozens of people I could turn to in a tough spot and I am there for them as well. It's coming over with cookies for the late night break-up, even when you'd rather go to bed. It's checking in on your friends when you know they're going through a tough time. It's being willing to just sit and listen when people need to talk.
I once asked my best friend why I was her best friend (just out of curiosity) and she said the first time we talked, she was blown away by how intently I listened to her. She was an only child with a workaholic single mom, so she wasn't used to getting someone's undivided attention.
I also like to have fun, crack jokes and laugh easily. I can talk to anyone about anything, and that goes a long way as well.
So have lots of friends, you have to listen, treat them the way you want them to treat you, and just be fun to be around.

It comes naturally for me. I'm a decent looking guy and my genuine personally, kindness and loyalty wins them over every time. A good looking guy with a personality to match. Rugged

Not with women necessarily, but with friends, I would die for them. Now if I could only get a woman to realize that?LOL.......
It's not possible to have many friends. You can be friendly with a lot of people but it's not good to call every Tom, Dick and Harry a friend because you have to invest time with people in order for friendship to develop. I don't consider everyone friend material without having to pass my rigorous testing process.
I have no time for popularity, well not at least since school.
I think people who are popular either are good/kind people, have a lot of charisma, or can engage with others well. Sometimes there is no reason for popularity; in life not all things have ready explanations.
I'd say a good base to become popular is to be open and friendly to all, that way people would respect you and be more willing to consider you a friend.
