I never overtip. I know they need the extra cash, but I'm not rich or anything. I'll overtip only if the waiter is funny or something.
My generosity was a result of a few bizarre factors. It's the general norm that Asians don't tip a lot, why, I know folks who never tip at all. Coz tipping is no big deal in the East. You can absolutely walk out without a tip and the waiters will still be respectful if you walk in again.
I wanted to beat the stereotype, first of all, coz I was told several times as to how Asians (all types) are such cheap freaks. I even get these email forwards in my peer network. Naturally, I remember the first time I started getting generous, I tipped someone 10 dollars on a 17 dollar meal
Second, when I visit again, the people swarm around my table. It's full of waves, pats, people coming down from their part of the restaurant all the way across to greet and ask me if everything's fine. I'm not complaining about all the attention I get when the rest of the customers are like "what's with this dude?"
That means the Antlered Chamataka is there.
Last but not least, the waiters/waitresses deserve it. It's not the best job in the world, and I really appreciate their patience and service.

Well it makes sense. But I say for myself, better you than me--cuz I don't like attention when I go out.

I sorta have to disagree that Asians are bad tippers and "cheap freaks". I worked at Grand Canyon for two years and they were really VERY good tippers. Especially the Japanese. That surprised me because my ex grew up in Japan, worked in a restaurant there when he was in high school, wasn't supposed to ever accept tips and actually got fired for doing so. It simply isn't something that's done there. But when they come to the US as tourists they don't seem to have a problem with it.
As a waitress for many years I never 'fawned' over people to make tips. I did my job, joked with them, did my very best to take care of them and that worked for me!
Food service jobs are what a person makes of them. It's hard work, physically and mentally, but some people...like me...really enjoy doing it.

More than just deserving it, they need it. Restaurants have to withhold tax from the servers, based upon the total costs of the meals served and those are factored into the year-end income for filing purposes. When you stiff a wait-person you have actually cost them money, especially if it was a large ticket. The IRS and various states assume a certain percentage of tips received in determining the individual's overall tax burden.
Good waiters and waitresses also tip-out their bussers and the cooks who clear their tables quickly so others can be seated and take special care with the dishes served by them

They need to try that at Famous Dave's! I always sit in the bar because of the wait. I love the food but they are not speedy!
