There is absolutely no question that Neanderthals lived between 38,000 and 45,000 years ago. There is no question based upon the fossil record or DNA analysis that they constituted a separate species from modern humans yet were so genetically close that there is rather conclusive evidence that humans and Neanderthals interbred.
So, if Neanderthals were the second youngest species of homo sapiens who may have had all of the mental attributes of early man, this would require that "God" created a number of species in his own image, yet there is no mention of this in the Bible, unless we can only deduce that Adam and Eve were not homo sapiens after all but some earlier version of the genus Homo.
First of all, were Neanderthals homo sapiens? I need to check on that, but I like your question. Not only the Neanderthals; there were many species with brains twice as large as modern day apes and about 400 cm smaller than ours. They weren't quite human in the modern sense, but they were vastly superior in intelligence than apes.
I just saw a series on human origins, a PBS series, and I was riveted. As far back as homo eructus, originated 2-1.5 million years ago, researchers have discovered through fossil remains, DNA, dental work (sorry, don't know the exact term), etc. that they already had all the biological conditions necessary for acquiring language. Since the hunters needed to cooperate in tracking down game, they may have had a very rudimentary form of speech, with very basic linguistic symbols for weapons, tools, fire, the prey. They are what Neanderthals and modern day humans evolved from, as well as the dwarf-like "Hobbit" in southeast Asia and another hominid species, I've forgotten the name, that apparently lived around modern day Beijing almost 1 million years ago. There were 2 or 3 other species mentioned, so us, modern day homo sapiens, were not alone. Several hominid species existed on our Earth 1 million years ago, over time the others went extinct and we were the last hominid species left.
I personally believe that the Adam and Eve of the Bible were the symbolic representation of the first Cro-Magnum (sp.?), early us. Actually, it is theorized that we all did come from one "mother", and scientists have named her Eve. She lived in what is modern day Tanzania about 150,000 years ago.
The plot thickens, as they say. There was another homo sapiens subspecies, called homo sapien idaltu, that supposedly developed before our ancestor, homo sapiens sapiens, about 10,000 years earlier. Although some significant differences from Cro-Magnon (spelled it right this time) skulls, this subspecies was more similar than the Neanderthals.
There are two theories about this group, they assimilated with the Cro-Magnon, since they were as developed and similar, and some of their genetic material lives within us, or they went extinct due to some natural disaster or pandemic.
What would our world be like if another hominid species, such as the Neanderthals, had remained extant? The Neanderthals were not as warlike or aggressive as the Cro-Magnon, sort of the difference between chimps and bonobos, chimps being the fighters, bonobos, the lovers. They were every bit as smart, but lagged behind in the symbolism department. Cro-Magnon already had and wore symbols of their religious/cultural identity such as body/face paint, beads and personal adornments on their clothing. And, as another poster mentioned, Cro-Magnon had the techno. advantage of projectile weapons.

The migration of homonidsout of Africa from began very early but all homonids orignates from Africa according to genetic studies.

Cro-Nagmon was much more adaptable than the Neanderthals and thus was more succesful.
