Why does a religion that shuns material possession so much have a giant statue made out of gold? They're not attached to it so they build with it?
The photos of the Buddha statue in the post above yours isn't made out of gold. It's either bronze or cement and is covered with a gold-colored paint. That said, Wat Traimit in Bangkok has a statue with an interesting story to it. It's about 9.8 feet tall, is made of solid gold and weighs a bit over 6 US tons.

Thanks, dude. The first non-belly statue of the legendary Indian hunk turned loon
I just get bummed that they took an awesome Bollywood material desi guy like Tony and lumped a belly on him LMAO
Blame it on the Asians
The Chinese are famous for the big-bellied style Buddhas. "Rub it for good luck". The styles generally found in Thailand are very distinct and impressive. There might be some chubby ones, but I've never seen any.
This one is referred to as Chinnarat Buddha and is frequently copied for it's uniquely elegant style. It's located at Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat (also known as Wat Yai) in Phitsanulok, Thailand, which is in Northern Thailand. It's fairly close to Sukhothai. I believe it's made of brass.
Location: On the "Left Coast", somewhere in "the Land of Fruits & Nuts"

Mt. Merapi viewed in the distance (prior to the recent eruptions), from the Buddhist temple at Borobudur, located near the city of Jogjakarta on the island of Java. Each of the bell-shaped "stupas" contains a statue of the Buddha.
Not technically "statues", but Buddhist temples at sunrise, located at Bagan in Myanmar
