I do not know if the question can be answered. It seems we only have 2 choices. Either Matter and Energy occurred spontaneously or they were created by a creator. The inability to prove either does not equate to meaning the other is correct.
There is even a third possibility, that under some conditions both are correct. Meaning a view that some parts of the universe occurred spontaneously and some parts were created.
I do believe that unless somebody can provide absolute replicable proof, neither of us can say "We Know" the best any of us can say is "I believe...(such & such).....is the cause."
This just may be an area in which both Atheists and Theists have to base their answer upon belief and faith their belief is correct.
I have an answer... but first, you must choose. Green pill or red?
If we are in a real "Matrix" our "universe" could have been created in 6 days and be only 6000 years old complete with a god-ish bearded dude who can seemingly jump into our world and out at will, be able to know EVERYTHING that happens and do whatever he wants to, all within the laws of physics as we understand them.
True, it probably isn't that way but I challenge anyone to scientifically prove we are not living in a simulated universe...
Simple. The nonsensical yet indisputable results of the double slit experiment, the way light always takes the fastest path, even if it's a longer distance, and quantum tunneling all point to a calculated virtual reality. Such a thing requires a creator.
Notwithstanding my last post, I am not endorsing any particular religious beliefs, to the contrary if I'm right, it basically discredits all human religions, for ifany of them had a inside connection to the creator, my hypothesis would have been known.

Not to mention I have yet to find a true believer who actually tries to argue god can exist because we don't live in a "real universe". You see what happens when non-believers (who watch and read too much sci-fi) use logic to argue for the illogical? It's a catastrophe!
