Why is it so important for some people to prove others wrong?
Aren't we all like that on certain subjects?
When we are absolutely sure we are right but people keep believing we are wrong, it bothers us.
I am not like that on this forum, but when it comes to discussing the golf swing, I get really upset when people disagree with me. On the issues I care about the most, I am absolutely sure I am right because my ideas are based on videos of golf swing and scientific studies done at UCLA. However, people keep disagreeing with me, and it irritates me so much that I can't help but laugh.
If you were wrong, wouldn't you rather be shown you were wrong instead of trundling on through life thinking you were right...when you were wrong!?!? I mean.....if I could prove you were wrong, why would you want to continue with incorrect thinking??
I gleaned this from Eastern Philosophy many moons ago: All arguments are juvenile!
And? A bruised ego takes longer to heal than a physical injury!
Just, everybody avoid the whole, smashing one's head into a brick wall, then getting angry at the wall, so smashing one's head into the wall harder as a means of vengeance...thing.
Actually, in some cases it's worse than that, because upon discovering that the wall has feelings, some people become more aggresive upon discovering such weakness. Thankfully, there is the limiting factor of appearing smug while attempting to cause the wall pain.
Just avoid the above, and most people are probably fine.
Thanks all for answering and posing a couple of your own questions.
Aren't we all guilty of this sometimes? Yes, probably. Or least most of us are guilty of it sometimes.
I have been guilty of it myself during certain phases of my life, more than on certain subjects, although even there, yes I am more passionate about certain subjects than others.
Coincidentally (ironically?), one of the subjects I am passionate about is how wrong it is to try to impose your point of view (sometimes your will) on those around you!
I guess I've been around too many angry people who are convinced (they think they know) they are right. So, I don't have a lot of patience or respect for that attitude.
I don't say this to pick on anyone, it's just been my experience that behaving in that way can destroy relationships (of any kind).
Wouldn't I want someone to point out if I were wrong? hmmmm Probably not in all cases. And my return question is, at what expense?
Some folks can't seem to resist belittling other's while trying to point out what is so "clear" to them.
Nah, as they say...ignorance is bliss. In a few cases, I agree with that!
Some folks can't seem to resist belittling other's while trying to point out what is so "clear" to them.
....but you were not talking about what is "clear' to someone. You were talking about something that can be proven. If I can 'prove' that you are wrong then why would you not listen?
Why is it so important for some people to prove others wrong?
I can somewhat understand enjoying a lively debate.
But sometimes it seems that people go beyond the lively debate, to the point where it starts to get downright ugly.
What's the point of it?
What's the motivation?
I'd say 99% of the motivation in these types is ego. Some people just never grow up.
