In this Chapter, Jacob speaks to his 12 sons. He describes what will befall the 12 tribes in the latter days. If we are in the latter days, which most of us believe, then, this chapter seems confusing for me. Joseph in particular is clearly a strength in the world.
So my question is, how do you explain the 12 tribes strengths in Genesis chapter 49 with current Israel today?

What 12 tribes? There are no longer 12 tribes so how can anything 'befall' them? The Old Testament nation of Israel does not and can never exist anymore... they were destroyed by and assimilated into Assyria.
Ever since we had access to mass media, even in the late 1800s with the proliferation of the mass printing press and newspapers, we've been besieged with the inevitable threat (or separately hoped for..) of The End Times, when, if you didn't just blindly go along with those unthinking masses of Jesus groupies, those End Times have been really "imminent". Due, in fact, just yesterday!
So then, uhmmm... what's happening? Where is it? Bring it on. I'm more than ready. NOTE: Just don't come a'wandering and a'spouting your vastly illiterate silliness onto my well-stocked property without a personal and recently minted invite! Lest you want to arrive at your own End Times real quick-like!

Chalk it up to a guy with a big ego who had a knack for tall tales. It's a good story, but it's had its run. It's derailed enough lives. Time to move on.

Jacob was not speaking about the 21st Century. He was speaking about the future of the nation of Israel--specifically his son's and their futures.

Sorry about that!
Don't be sorry about it?... Thanks for the response. It says later days, thats the thing that confuses me.

How would you take "later days" to mean the 21st Century? How do you know that "later days" means now? We have no idea if this world will still be spinning 2000 years from now.

That makes the most sense so far. Thanks for responding to my question specifically. I realize, I need to know what the word "later days" means in the bible...is it an end time? or latter in days like when Israel rose?
For the simple reader like myself, it comes across as end times. However, I clearly don't know what that word means according to the bible. But I think you answer the question the best way it could be answered. Thanks again
"later days".... a good translation would have been "sometime in the future," but whoever first translated it, decided that Later Days worked better for him and so it was.
