It was a very interesting discussion that Neil deGrasse Tyson gave last night. The theme was how the US has been lagging in innovation since landing a man on the moon 47 years ago.

One person asked him about the "anti-intellectual" establishment, which I see a lot of this mentality in religious folks.

Neil stated that when you don't have a civilization based on innovation, science and technology then this is the end of your economy and most of the citizens of such a society will die poor.

Think about it...the US has not done much of anything with respect to innovation since we landed on the moon 47 years ago.

We are not leading in anything innovative that is addressing the issues we face as a Nation or that addressees the major issues facing this Planet.

People who shun science and technology should take a good look back in history. Take special note of what happened to the Arab world which was at one time tops in scientific achievement world wide.

Religion killed it for them and they have never recovered since. The US is heading straight down this path thanks to ignorant religious anti-intellectuals. And they wonder why most have no tolerance for them?

Neil explains very nicely if you skip to 20:00...he's gets going at 25:00. American we have a problem and if we don't overcome it we will end up like the Arab world today...a collapse of our entire intellectual foundation, which will resulting in an economic collapse and then living in the conditions that we see in the Middle East/Arab World today.

Love his comment of what NEW discoveries has the idea of Intelligent Design given mankind. Not only lately, but ever.

With all due respect to Mr. deGrasse Tyson, and to you, that isn't strictly true. The U.S. Has been a leader in innovation in many fields of endeavor for at least as long as I've been alive (57 years). And that has occurred despite the bigotry and hatred of many in the religious realm against anything not pre-approved by them.

Sure we have some innovations but nothing as big as landing a man on the moon. That was his point. His point also was that we did not land a man on the moon because we wanted to be on the forefront of Space Exploration....we only went to the moon due to the war.

Funny thing...last night during the Q&A session, one guy stood up and mentioned to Neil that the room was full of Bay Area Techs and Engineers and how could Neil say that the US has not done much in the way of innovation since landing a man on the moon?

Neil responded to the fact that sure we all love the next new app, BUT these apps are not doing anything to address the major issues. He topped it off with telling him that they need to bust their butts and come up with something really innovative that addresses the big issues facing the planet.

He was surprised at the reaction of the Falcon 9 landing. He showed us the footage of the company responses of it landing and compared it to when we landed a man on the moon. This is the first type of Space innovation that we have seen in 47 years! We should not be celebrating something that we already achieved in the 60's.

He showed us engineering failures that we are now starting to see in the US.

Example: Bridges and levees collapsing but yet the Roman aqueducts are still holding up 2000 years later.

Trains colliding due to both of them on the same track heading towards each other. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008_C...rain_collision

Come on these things should not be happening in the 21st Century if we were on top of our game.

Lol, we need some kind of technology to keep locomotive engineers from using texting technology while driving.

It wasn't a lack of technology that caused the crash.

Lack technology caused it.

There should have been sensors telling the trains that they are on the same track heading towards each other. They should have known this miles before they collided. Come on we are in the 21st Century!

Self-Driving cars but we can't prevent head on train collisions?

Think man Think!

Maybe just self driving trains. Then you don't have texting issues.

I sure hope pilots aren't texting while coming in for a landing.

Or better technology that alerts both trains that they are heading towards each other miles in advance of a collision.

Sad and scary reality is that we are dwindling in pilot talent as well.

America we have a problem and something drastic needs to happen. But most importantly people need to educate themselves in the truth and wake up to how poorly the US is doing compared to other countries when it comes to education and innovation.

Planes now actually can fly themselves. And have for some time.

About 15 years ago I was in the cockpit with a pilot friend of mine on an A320. I was amazed how little pilot input was done to fly the plane, including the landing in fog. It was all done automatically and the only input once landed was reverse thrusters and of course taxing to the gate.

It was quite the eye opener. I suspect technology has advanced to the point that the plane could probably take itself to the gate without a pilot.
